Paint Scratch Repair in Wylie, From Light Scuffs to Deep Keying

A brush with a hedge in a driveway off FM 1378, a scuff from a tight garage, or someone's key down the side of the car. Depth decides the fix.

Every Scratch Has a Depth, and the Depth Decides the Repair

Automotive paint is built in layers: clear coat on top, then color, then primer, then the metal or plastic underneath. A scratch that only reached the clear coat can often be polished out in an hour. One that cut through to primer or bare metal needs to be filled, painted and blended. Our Wylie technicians check the depth with light, touch and a paint thickness gauge before recommending anything, so you don't pay for a respray when polishing will do. Scratches tend to come in after tight parking, overgrown driveways or the occasional act of vandalism. The inspection takes a few minutes, and you'll know which repair fits before work starts.

What Our Scratch Repair Includes

Scratch repair ranges from a polish to a refinish. These are the steps we use.

  • Depth assessment

We check whether the scratch is in the clear coat, the color layer or down to primer and metal.

  • Paint thickness reading

A gauge tells us how much clear coat is left to work with before polishing.

  • Machine polishing

Light scratches and scuffs are leveled out with compounds and a machine polisher.

  • Wet sanding

Slightly deeper clear-coat scratches are carefully wet-sanded, then polished back to gloss.

  • Touch-up fill

Small chips and narrow scratches can be filled with matched paint and leveled.

  • Spot refinishing

Deep scratches get sanded, primed and painted in a small area, then blended out.

  • Panel refinish

Long key scratches across a panel are refinished panel by panel and blended for an even look.

  • Final gloss match

The repaired area is polished to match the shine of the surrounding paint.

How We Repair a Scratch

  1. 1

    Measure the depth

We clean the area and look at the scratch closely, then measure the paint thickness nearby. That tells us whether polishing is safe or if the scratch needs paint. You get the recommendation and the estimate right away. If it can be polished, we'll say so.

  2. 2

    Polish or refinish

Shallow scratches are compounded and polished out. Deeper ones are sanded, primed and refinished in the booth. Larger scratches across a panel are blended into the adjacent panels. Most scratch repairs are done in a day or two.

  3. 3

    Inspect in daylight

We look at the repair outside where the sun shows every swirl. Any haze is polished out. Then you pick up a car that looks like the scratch never happened.

Why Drivers Bring Us Their Scratches

  • No unneeded paint

If polishing removes it, we polish. Repainting a panel that didn't need it isn't a good repair.

  • Careful with clear coat

Measuring thickness keeps us from polishing through the factory clear coat.

  • Matched and blended

When paint is needed, it's matched and blended like any of our larger refinishes.

Can't Stop Seeing That Scratch?

Scratches that reach bare metal can rust, especially after a wet spring. Call and tell us how deep it looks, and we'll explain the fix.
